Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup cup white onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon Chili powder

Instructions

  • SAUTE
In step one take a medium-sized saucepan and Melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion in saucepan and cook until it becomes soft and translucent.  after that add the garlic and red pepper flakes and continue cooking for 30 seconds until it comes into proper color. Toasting the red pepper until fragrant will bring out the oils so the BBQ sauce is at the right spice level.
  • SIMMER
In step two mix the ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder in a bowl. Bring the mixture to a boil. Let the mixture simmer for 10 to 30 minutes, then remove from the heat and pour into the pan with the meat. You can get this mixture as thick or thin as you like. If you overdid it, add some water and reheat.
  • PUREE
Technically optional, but highly recommended. Make your BBQ sauce smooth. If the BBQ sauce is too thin, then add it back in the pane on the heat and simmer until it reduces to your required consistency.
This method works best when you are going for a barbecue and need to make your favorite sauce. If you are not using it immediately, you can freeze it in ice cube trays, then pop them out and pop them into a freezer bag.
